What Are the Symptoms of Overtraining?

Training = Work + Rest

Overtraining = Too Much Work + Too Little Rest

Signs of Overtraining:

  • History of heavy training and competition (relative to lifestyle)
  • Decrease in training capacity (especially ability to recover from sessions)
  • Drop in performance
  • Fatigued, washed out, drained and lacking in energy
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Increased anxiety and irritability
  • Sleep disturbances (found in 90% of cases) insomnia, nightmares, poor sleep quality
  • Frequent infections (particularly upper respiratory tract)
  • Elevated resting heart rate
  • Mild muscle soreness, general aches and pains
  • Increased incidence of injuries

You work hard to get results. Your body has to take time to re-coop and recover. As we age, our body tends to resist the intense, repetitive workouts and movements. Giving your body a day off will do wonders. A day off can mean yoga, stretching and foam rolling to keep your body active and mobile while giving it a rest from the pounding and lifting. Infrared saunas, red light therapy, cryotherapy, massage, and rest will restore your body and allow for recovery.

Runners, in particular, find it hard to take a day off. However, it is essential for them to rest. It is during those recover phases that the body is able to get stronger and faster.
